Wowza! Who knew that those Upper East-siders had it in them?!
Time Warner will be making some serious dollah dollah bills off of the CW's Gossip Girl, after signing two deals with Netflix and Hulu to license the series' reruns via the net that will generate $100 million in revenue this quarter, half of which will be booked as an operating profit!
At least, that's according to their chief financial officer, Josh Martin, who reported such to analysts on the company's earnings call today!
Smart move, putting it up on the net!
We imagine with numbers like that, many shows will be following suit!
This is where the next generation of TV is going, folks!
We knew The CW made a good call by not making their streaming deal exclusive with Netflix!
Earlier this month, CW President Mark Pedowitz announced that the network had signed a 4-year non-exclusive licensing deal with Netflix, in which 700+ hours of CW shows would be available for streaming.
Now, the network has ALSO signed a five-year licensing agreement with Hulu, which will provide both Hulu Plus and the free version of Hulu with CW programming by the end of the year!
Here's what Prez Pedowitz had to say about the new deal:
"Our new arrangement with Hulu only affirms the incredible value of The CW’s series, as well as amplifying the immense power of the broadcast network model. As we increase the amount of year round original programming on The CW, this deal provides our shows with greater exposure on a new platform, helping build even more awareness that will drive viewers back to the network and its affiliates. We see this as a win for everyone involved, the network, the stations, Hulu and ultimately, the viewers."
And here's more from Hulu's SVP of Content Andy Forssell:
"The CW programming is a great example of the kind of (Read more...)
Considering the state Netflix is in, our money is on Hulu, but only time will tell for sure.
Since the news broke that new episodes of Arrested Development are in, well, development, everyone is losing their shiz, from fans to the tv execs to distributors. When talking of the latter, we're only really speaking of the two online companies that are vying to snag the rights to the 9-10 new episodes of AD when they are finally released.
At present, both distributors offer original episodes of the series from previous seasons, but this war is to get exclusive rights to the new episodes. Looks like everyone's forgotten about the lessons they learned in kindergarten about sharing!
So who will win? No doubt Netflix needs such a high-profiled show to boost their subscriptions and brand, but Hulu seems the more viable choice as it's got more people invested in it than Netflix.
Tough call. Who do U think will snag the coveted series?
...of sorts...
In an effort to boost viewership, FOX has decided to use the underwire of today's television culture by leaking the first episode of The New Girl to iTunes, Hulu, and Fox.com.
The "leak" begins September 6 which will give the series two full weeks of chitter chatter to amp up the official premiere.
With Zooey Deschanelstarring, we doubt it's going to need that much of a boost, but ya never know!

Morgan Spurlock and Hulu have teamed up together to create Hulu's first series -- A Day in the Life.
The six episode season will showcase what it's like to live the life of fascinating people. From Girl Talk to Will.i.am, Spurlock is going to show us what it means to live like them.
Spurlock, who did Super Size Me and Greatest Movie Ever Sold, is sure to document an excellent series, saying:
As a filmmaker, I am always looking for new and exciting ways to reach an audience and to tell stories. When the opportunity to create an original doc series with Hulu presented itself, I jumped at the chance. Hulu has become such an important outlet for content creators and a real destination for fans. They're not afraid to take risks and they've been an amazing distribution partner on all our films. I can't think of a better environment to share ‘A Day in the Life' stories with millions of people.
Who do U think they should document?

Google is just the latest company to throw their hat in the Hulu ring.
Along with Microsoft and Yahoo, Google has been added to the list of potential buyers interested in purchasing Hulu, which is currently co-owned by Disney, News Corp., NBC Universal and Providence Equity Partners.
If bidders go high enough, analysts say that Hulu could receive about $2 billion-$3 billion in the deal.
Whoa. That's some major dough. If Google takes over Hulu, we wonder how that will affect their deal with YouTube??

Back in July, things weren't looking too good for Hulu, and we said ourselves that they better come up with a pretty big gimmick to get back on top!
Now, Hulu Plus, the company's paid streaming service, has partnered with The Criterion Collection, and will include many "important classic and contemporary films" in their service.
They'll start out with 150 of Criterion's titles, and an additional 650 will be added in the next several months.
This might not be anything TOO exciting to the folks who utilize Hulu for Modern Family re-runs, but for cinephiles looking for rare titles, and film students who can't afford to pay $30 for a copy of Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, this is actually a pretty great value.
Guess the big question here is whether or not there are enough hardcore film folks out there to make this a profitable venture.
Would U sign up for Hulu Plus to gain access to lots of movies rare and important films?

We HOPE this isn't true, ABC.
Modern Family, which premieres its second season on Wednesday, is in the midst of a lawsuit filed by Martin Alexander, who claims that defendants "illegally copied and/or created" the show based on his "copyrighted work."
In the complaint he filed, he described a pilot he wrote, Loony Ben, which is VERY similar to Modern Family. Here's what the complaint said about it:
"Mr. Alexander began circulating [his] work throughout Hollywood and Los Angeles, California and in New York, submitting it to agents, producers, directors, production companies, networks, network executives, and contests."
One point that seems to make his case increasingly legitimate is the fact that in 2006, he filed a proposed cast list with the U.S. Copyright office, which included Sofia Vergara. Here are the details:
"…includes obscure actress Sofia Vergara as the stunningly beautiful, fiery, temperamental, Latina mother, with a thick accent, who's in love with a Caucasian man and always makes him do the right thing, especially where her son is concerned."
That does seem a bit uncanny, we've got to admit.
Here's a further list of similarities between Modern Family and Alexander's show:
