Who doesn’t know Oprah Winfrey? I do not think she needs anymore introduction. Not only she’s wealthy, she’s influential and powerful, she’s also one of the most giving soul ever alive. Her life has not been an easy ride as well. She has gone through abusive relationships and not to mention those attacks from the media throughout the years. How can someone cope with that? Oprah did it. I don’t think Rome is being built in one day and definitely Oprah has this acquired skill to be resilient and ever growing.
I have known Oprah since I was 12 though at that time I did not understand most of the words that came out from her mouth. English was not my mother tongue. Then few years back I was back and gluing myself to The Oprah Winfrey Show (TOWS). I don’t really watch all of them though, as not all are relevant to my growing. I do not enjoy when there are celebrities being interviewed or some makeover and fashion show. But when the topic is close to my heart, I’ll be there.
I realize after a few years of watching her, there are a few traits of hers that I think people may benefit too. Here they are:
Love Yourself
Even though Oprah has been a very giving and helpful person, she was a victim of abusive relationship. That has caused by her love for others greater than for herself. She may have learned it the hard way an ho-boy she learned the lesson well. There may be times where she seems to be so obnoxious and self-centered, but she realized she needs to put herself first before others will take her seriously. If you don’t take care of yourself, how can you expect others to take care of you? In the end, there’ll only be you and yourself. That’s how you came into this world and that’s how you’ll leave it. Be the very best friend you’ve ever had to yourself, cause when all else fail, you know you have yourself to count on.
Love Others
As you can see, Oprah is always at the service of others (after she has made sure her well-being is taken care of). She helped those that’s close to her heart. She built school. She gave things away. She helped people who really need. It may be for great TV but come on, 1 or 2, may be great TV but all the time consistently, that’s got to be something inside her that sparks the energy to be giving. You can’t do it if you only crave for superficial fame. What will you get by being giving? You’d be surprise. You may not have millions to give away, even an hour spent for others who really need, you will feel eternally grateful for the experience. You may not realize that but giving to others will gain you more “stuffs” than receiving the actual gifts.
Follow Your Guts
I can’t count the number of times Oprah has emphasized this statement, be it on her show, articles, speech, interviews, magazines, etc. Follow your guts. Your feeling is your internal compass to life. It’s so difficult to do at times, as we tend to be so out-of-touch with ourselves. Why? Because in the first place, we forget to love ourselves. How can we know what our guts is telling us if we don’t make us our best friend? I myself need to learn more of this technique too. But so far, so good. It’s served me well if I do listen. When I don’t … well, guess you know what kind of outcomes will come.
Learn from Your Mistakes
Taken from her speech to the Standford University 2008 graduates, as she is still a human, she made mistakes. This is another point that she loves to emphasized when it comes to her life long lesson. To learn from your mistake. If you don’t get it right the first time, you’ll bound to retake the lesson and get retested again. I can speak for this. I tend to retake my lesson. It ain’t pleasant. No wonder there’s a slogan – Get it right first time.
So, what would Oprah do when faced with challenges? To sum up these are the steps for sure she’ll be doing:
- Love yourself
- Love others
- Follow your guts
- Learn from your mistakes
Hope all the lessons will be beneficial for you. Keep on learning and growing in life.
Oprah makes me happy whenever I see her on TV. She does a lot of good for the world with her talk show and she has helped a ton of people with problems. She is much loved by many people out there.
